Ms. Sweet’s practice includes the defense of complex medical malpractice actions, legal malpractice actions as well as claims against long-term care facilities.
She also represents physicians and other health care professionals subject to discipline at the institutional level and with respect to state agency action against their license to practice.
A former confidential law clerk to the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division, Fourth Judicial Department, Ms. Sweet also handles appeals in her area of practice.
Ms. Sweet is a graduate of Boston College, where she was honored as the Big East Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year and inducted into the Hall of Fame. Ms. Sweet graduated from the Villanova Law School where she was president of the Moot Court Board.
Ms. Sweet is admitted to practice in the State of New York and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She is also admitted in the United States District Court for the Western District of New York and in the United States Bankruptcy Court. She also serves as a certified Federal Court Mediator for the United States District Court for the Western District of New York. She is a member of the American Bar Association where she serves as an elected delegate in the House of Delegates.
She is also a member of the New York State Bar Association where she has served on various committees including the Nominating Committee, Leadership Development Committee, Task Force on Criminal Discovery Reform, Physician and Licensed Health Care Committee and Professional Discipline Committee. Ms. Sweet was the President of the Bar Association of Erie County from 2012-2013.
She is a member of the Western New York Trial Lawyers Association and the Defense Trial Lawyers of Western New York, which honored her as its Lawyer of the Year in 2015. In 2008, the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York Western Chapter honored Ms. Sweet with the M. Dolores Denman Lady Justice Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Ms. Sweet was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2012 and was honored by Best Lawyers in America as Buffalo, New York’s Lawyer of the Year in the field of medical malpractice defense in 2012. She has also been recognized as an Upstate New York SuperLawyer by SuperLawyers and among the “Top 25 Women Attorneys” in Upstate New York form 2009 to 2015. Ms. Sweet is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America.
She served on the Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission for the New York State Eighth Judicial District from 2014 to 2016 and has been a member of the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division Committee on Character and Fitness since 2013. She was the Founding Chair of the Upstate Tri-County Bar Association’s Commission on Judicial Appointments. She served on the Board of Directors of Volunteer Lawyers Project Inc. from 2011 to 2012 and since 2010 she has been a volunteer ambassador for AIDS Community Services.
